Company: Have We Met?, Winnipeg, MB
Venue: 8 - The Rachel Browne Theatre
The performance is filled with the sweeping and sexy movements befitting music videos, often accompanied by both visual and verbal jokes.
The core concept behind this show is that we all collect -- or even hoard -- objects that don't necessarily fulfill us as people.
In this one-hour piece, the "collectors" are four young dancers who are obsessed with a massive pile of shoes (representing anything one might pointlessly accumulate). Brett Owen
(who is also the director and choreographer), Janelle Hacault, Frances Young and Brianna Ray Ferguson deliver the choreography with boundless energy and many playful winks to the audience.
The performance is filled with the sweeping and sexy movements befitting music videos, often accompanied by both visual and verbal jokes. It's nice to see that the ensemble isn't afraid to inject silly, humorous moments into contemporary dance.
Thematically though, the show could use a bit more complexity. Its message doesn't go much deeper than "materialism is unfulfilling and shallow," and clichés like "if the shoe fits" are maybe a little too evident.
Nonetheless, this group has pulled off a well-rehearsed production with many fun moments.
