Fringers beware – something wicked charming this way comes.
—Michelle Palansky
It takes guts to get on to a bare bones stage with nothing to support you but a pile of books and a water bottle. Corin Raymond pulls off his autobiographical tale, of a life lived deeply through books, with warmth and wit.
Bookworm is shaped by the opening to Ray Bradbury's novel, Something Wicked This Way Comes. Imagine the two boys from this novel, William Halloway and Jim Nightshade, morphed into one lonely boy from Ontario. Living in a house full of books, failing at school, he grows up to be a singer songwriter earning money for his next album by collecting Canadian Tire cash. Raymond's story is odd and inspiring, just like a classic sci-fi tale.
A love letter to literature in general and Ray Bradbury in particular, see this show if you ever bought a book instead of groceries. If you are looking for mega musical extravaganzas or multi-media visual explosions this show will likely not be for you.
Skillfully constructed and lovingly told, Bookworm is like finding your favourite nook in the library and curling up for an hour with a good friend who really gets you. Fringers beware - something wicked charming this way comes.
