My Farmers' Market employee Mitch is all set to deliver your groceries (Nathan Steele)
I want to have availability and access to wholesome good food--things that are good for you, that you can feel good about eating. And you can have that to your door.
—Nathan Steele, owner of My Farmers' Market
Here's how it works. Go online to the My Farmers' Market website, place an order, and it will be delivered to your door later that same day.
Nathan Steele is the man behind this new online grocery store. "I want to be able to bring people whole foods really conveniently and efficiently," he says.
"Our focus is supporting local farms," he continues. "I've met the farmers, I've shaken their hands."
The aisles of his online store are stocked with such local products as cheese from Oak Island Acres and Bothwell, and eggs and pasta from Nature's Farm. Elk and bison and raised naturally in Manitoba and he's expecting local strawberries to arrive this week.
The range of fresh, local options will be increasing regularly as the season progresses. Customers will notice some non-local items on the list, such as bananas, which he offers for the sake of variety. In this way he feels he can offer one-stop shopping, or technically, no-stop shopping.
The young entrepreneur is driven by his love for wholesome produce. "I believe in a healthy lifestyle and I believe in whole foods," he says. "I get really passionate about eating foods that are good for us. We can be creating healthier communities. I want to have availability and access to wholesome good food. Things that are good for you, that you can feel good about eating. And you can have that to your door."
Steele says his business is different from other farm-share companies because customers can tailor their orders to suit their needs, rather than receiving a mystery basket. And the company offers same-day delivery.
He isn't worried about potential environmental issues of delivering by truck, and says the company offsets the issue by planning deliveries efficiently. "Our software enables us to do multiple drop-offs per route," he says.
My Farmers' Market is still in its infancy, so is currently only delivering to a few select neighbourhoods. He hopes to be able to expand his delivery citywide soon.
