Steve Patterson is appearing at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.
Best known across the country as host of CBC Radio's hit show, The Debaters, Steve Patterson is in town for the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.
While he's in the city to tape some episodes of his own show, he took a few minutes to answer Information Radio host Marcy Markusa's 10 quick questions.
What is the last text you sent?
I'm about to do morning radio on CBC Winnipeg.
What is absolutely 100% not debatable?
Um...your reflection in the mirror.
Who would you rather have a beer with - Don Cherry or Ron MacLean?
Ron MacLean. I like to speak when I have a beer.
What would you debate with Ron MacLean?
Probably something about Don Cherry's puns. We'd get in a debate about what the best pun in the world is.
You started comedy in 1997, shortly after ending a full time career as a copywriter. You wrote an ad for an amusement park that your boss found a little too amusing. What did that ad say?
It was something about a roller coaster and a middle aged man...
What was your worst job?
I worked at Red Lobster, but in the afternoons I did oil changes. So I went directly from oil changes to Red Lobster so I apologize to anyone who ate at Red Lobster where I worked, for probably oily seafood.
What is the worst pun you've ever made?
If you do the worst pun, it's usually the best. Last year, during this festival one of the volunteers, Anne Dawson was pregnant and I was trying to make her laugh loud enough to deliver the baby. She didn't and I was very angry. So I looked right into her stomach and I said "Tough womb." My favorite ever. Best/worst.
Who is your comedy idol?
A Canadian man named Derek Edwards. He's my favorite comic in the world. He's very Canadian. I'd put him pound for pound with anybody.
What's your biggest regret?
Sometimes, I regret doing comedy in the morning...but then once you've started, it's great. So I don't really have any big regrets. Once it's done, it's done.
What makes you laugh?
Good comedy. Smart comedy that has a point to it. Which is ironic, given some of the stuff I've said this morning.
