Darcy Michael will be debating the merits of natural medicine at a live taping of "The Debater" on April 13.
Canadian comic Darcy Michael lost more than 100 pounds, undergoing a
significant physical transformation. SCENE wondered if that change
affected his act as much as it affected his yoga poses.
Can you tell us a bit about what prompted you to lose so much weight?
I filmed a movie in October of 2010 called Lloyd the Conqueror - where I played a unicorn (dreams can come true kids). There's a scene where I had to run across a field to attack Mike Smith's (Trailer Park Boys) character. I nearly died on every take from being so out of shape, so the ball started rolling from there...
Your weight figured prominently in parts of your act, how did your comedy have to change to reflect the new you?
Everything changed - now I talk about all the things I did to lose the weight and the things I couldn't do - like Bikram yoga. Which, come on, it's not actually meant to be possible. It's a ridiculous culture celebrating near death experiences on a daily basis. So it's basically like heroin and that's bad for you too.
You do a bit on how much you hate yoga. Have you given it another try?
I've tried, I've conquered! I have actually always loved yoga, even at my heaviest I always did it but it was never funny to talk about being good at yoga, so I went the other angle at the time.
However in hindsight, I think the idea that I was heavy and could do yoga might have been funnier...great, thanks for making me realize that - now I'm gonna have to go get fat again.
Did you have any surprising reactions to your physical transformation?
The biggest thing was people just simply not knowing it was me. It worked out great because I could decide who I said hi to and who I ignored...
How do you manage an external change while your internal self stays the same? Or does it have to change too?
Wow, we are getting deep here. I'd like to think I'm always changing - whether it be related to being healthier and generally happier, perhaps but either way I never want to be someone who is always the same. That would bore me.
Are there things you miss about your old lifestyle?
How did your teenage daughter respond to her dad's transformation?
Its funny for us now to look at pictures over the years but because we all see each other all the time, the change wasn't as shocking for her or my husband...
Anything else you'd like to add?
Send me a snickers.
What other comic are you looking forward to seeing at the Festival?
I'm a huge fan of so many of the comics at the fest this year but I always like watching Debra DiGiovanni and Jon Dore - also Mark Forward is coming for the first time.
Darcy Michael performs on the Saturday Night Gala and will be taping a live episode of The Debaters on April 13th as part of the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.
