Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Centre director Rob Ring (Hugh Conacher)
Rob Ring is busy these days getting his fringe on. He's the festival director of the 25th annual Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, which kicks off July 18 and runs until July 29.
Ring has worked at various arts festivals across Canada, in New York and in Edinburgh, the birthplace of the fringe festival phenomenon.
Even though Ring has 173 plays on his mind, he still had time to read...or at least recommend a book for your reading pleasure.
I try to balance my reading between fiction and non-fiction. Recommendations from friends or reviews are usually how I pick my next book. I try to experiment with different authors or topics, although my non-fiction bookshelf mostly contains books on how people think as individuals or how people live- or could live better - collectively.
Currently, I'm reading Emma Donoghue's Room and Daniel Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow. Kahneman's book is a very interesting read about how the mind works intuitively versus how we think when forced into more challenging situations. I love how he exposes many of the inaccurate assumptions that we all naturally make.
