Robb Paterson, Associate Artistic Director (MTC)
I'm finding Reading My Father a very compelling read, packed with very personal dark stories, some humour and void of any self-pity.
—Robb Paterson, Director - "Next to Normal"
Actor/Director Robb Paterson has been involved in more than 150 productions across Canada over the past 31 years. As Associate Artistic Director at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre since 2004, Robb has recently directed The Fighting Days, White Christmas, Pride and Prejudice and Next to Normal, a "feel-everything" rock musical on until May 12 at MTC's John Hirsch Mainstage.
To prepare for a show, Robb does extensive research, which includes reading books about a play's subject matter to get a deeper understanding of the characters, setting and themes.
Since Next to Normal is about a suburban mom with bipolar disorder, Robb consulted with a psychiatrist, looked into treatments ranging from hypnosis to electroshock therapy, attended lectures and spoke with people who live with the illness.
SCENE was not surprised to learn that books on mental health were at the top of Robb's reading pile.
