Claudia Garcia dela Huerta will present "Something Fierce" at McNally Robinson on Jan. 25 (Claudia Garcia dela Huerta)
Paging all booklovers! On January 25th, at 8 p.m., CBC Radio and McNally Robinson invite you to Prairie Ink Restaurant for
an evening we're calling:
5 Writers, 5 Readers, 5 Minutes.
Canada Reads 2012 features five non-fiction titles this year, and in our regional warm-up to the national CBC Radio book brawl, five well-known Manitobans have been matched with the five titles. Up to Speed host Larry Updike will invite each reader to share their insights with the audience, each with a unique presentation lasting only five minutes. Well, maybe ten. No debating, no brawling, but plenty of insight, humour and stories.
First up is Claudia Garcia dela Huerta, former CBC Radio host and daughter of a Chilean revolutionary, who attests to the story told in Something Fierce by Carmen Aguirre.
1. How does this compare with your experience/interest in the subject?
I definitely have not read EVERYTHING there is to read on the subject of Chile's military coup. I've always had my father as my first source of information. He lived it. Him and the many other exiled Chileans living here in Winnipeg plus family and friends in Chile who also lived it -- some of them on the side of Pinochet... Interestingly enough a lot of my info has come from Isabel Allende's novels of fiction and non-fiction. I've also watched many documentaries, films, etc.
2. What surprised you about the book?
The subject matter surprised me. I had no idea this underground resistance existed. This is the one thing I never heard anyone talk about nor was it the subject of any docs I have seen. I guess I have always focused on the days leading up to the coup and then a couple of years after it. Once we came to Winnipeg in 1975, my parents immersed themselves in life here in Canada. There was never any real talk about what was happening in Chile at the time. We watched the news on TV, read any articles that appeared but it was always about THAT day -- Tuesday September 11th.
