One of the TD Kids' drawings (CBC)
On September 29, at the Millennium Library, I Know Here author Laurel Croza and illustrator Matt James met more than a hundred grade three students from Victoria-Albert and Sister MacNamara schools for a little give and take about the book.
The room was seething with kids who were full of energy, full of questions, and eager to share their drawings of what they know with Laurel and Matt.
Laurel and Matt talked and showed slides of how the book came to be, and then the kids rushed to the front to describe their art; from paintings of pet rats riding horses to tall buildings in the blazing sun, and from Afghanistan, Malaysia, Lebanon and Canada. The children connected instantly with I Know Here and its theme of keeping memories alive through art.
Laurel and Matt were overwhelmed by the kids' response and their beautiful drawings.
"I teared up," said Laurel, "The children were amazing with the stories of where they've come from, and what they remember."
I Know Here is one of five books nominated for the TD Kids Children's Literature Award. The winner will be announced on October 4.
