Apple's New iPad Mini

Tuesday, October 23

On the day when people were expecting the announcement of the new iPad Mini, Apple threw in a couple more "small" surprises. Before confirming the name of the smaller iPad, Apple CEO Tim Cook and vice president of marketing Tim Schiller presented the world with its smallest notebook yet, the 13-inch MacBook Pro, a thinner version of the new iMac, and a smaller, more affordable Mac Mini.

Neatly positioned between the iPhone and the iPad, the new iPad Mini is aimed directly at tablet market competitors, Amazon's Kindle Fire and Google's Nexus 7. The smaller iPad is described as 23 per cent thinner and 53 per cent lighter than the third generation iPad, with faster wireless performance and up to 10 hours of battery life. All of the software designed for the original iPad will work on the iPad Mini as they share the same display size of 1024 by 768 pixels.

Priced at $329, the iPad Mini fits into the Apple product lineup between the iPad 2 and the latest version of the iPod touch. However the price is significantly higher than the Kindle Fire, which starts at $159, and the Nexus 7, which starts at $199.

The iPad Mini goes on sale in Canada on Nov. 2.
