CBC Marketplace's Canada's Restaurant Secrets examines publicly available health inspection reports for 13 popular national restaurant chains in five cities - Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Toronto and Ottawa, from September 1, 2012 to October 20, 2013.
What about inspection reports in Manitoba? Convictions and closures information is publicly available but full report are not. CBC Manitoba did its own investigation and obtained reports for the same chains - including coffee shops, fast food chains and family dining restaurants - over the same period.
CBC News obtained violation reports of 13 chain restaurants from the Manitoba Health Protection Department for one year up to October 31, 2013.
Each was inspected by a Public Health Inspector at least once in the calendar year and 70 of 451 locations showed significant violations including: Improper temperature, cleanliness, pest infestations and food handling issues.
Current conditions are not reflected and restaurants were not shut down, fined or convicted for the violations by the Manitoba Health Protection Department.
