Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger has set Jan. 28 as the day for byelections in the provincial constituencies of Arthur-Virden and Morris.

Under provincial law, byelections must be held within a year of a seat becoming vacant.

Selinger has been under pressure from the Progressive Conservatives to fill the Morris seat, vacated by the retirement last February of Tory Mavis Taillieu.

The seat in Arthur-Virden became vacant in October when Tory Larry Maguire resigned to run for — and successfully win — a federal byelection in Brandon-Souris in November.

There are currently 37 New Democrats, 17 Progressive Conservatives, one Liberal, and two vacant seats in the Manitoba legislature.
