Since 2006, CBC Manitoba and the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project (Manitoba) have collaborated to provide Manitobans with the opportunity to observe a family of peregrines on the Falcon Cam as they nest and prepare to welcome their chicks.
Inside the Nest
with Tracy Maconachie, Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project
July 23 - Now that all our chicks have flown, the time has arrived to put the Falcon Cams to bed for another season. The Brandon chicks are becoming very skilled at flying but can still be seen regularly around the McKenzie Seeds Building. Here in Winnipeg, the Radisson chicks are hunting on their ow and are starting to venture further and further away from the nestbox as young birds their age do. By the end of August, all seven of this year's chicks will be independent of their parents and by the end of September should be starting their individual journeys south for the winter. Their parents will follow them down a bit later. We probably won't hear if this year's chicks survive for another year or two, but they are a pretty smart group and I wouldn't be surprised if we were to see some of them in a couple of years when they are old enough to have families of their own.
So for Princess, Ivy, McDermot, Fleet, Hart and Jubilee in Winnipeg, and Hurricane, Brooklyn, Hunter, Sol and Maya in Brandon, and from all of us at Manitoba's Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project, thank you to CBC Manitoba for hosting the Falcon Cams again this year and we hope to see everyone back again next spring when the peregrines return!
