Mainstreet on the Map

Thumbnail image for MELISSA.jpgWe're connecting with one half of an island couple who are having a great adventure living in ireland.

Nick Abou Risk is from Cornwall and works in the on-line poker world - in fact he's quite a champion at it - you may have heard stories we did about that. His wife Melissa Cameron is from Hampton - immigration rules and the high rate of unemployment in Ireland mean it's complicated for her to find work. But she's having a great time living in Dublin.

we reached her through skype

Fixed Election Dates

On Tuesday Robert Ghiz went to Government House to ask lieutenant-governor Frank Lewis to dissolve the legislature and call an election. It's the process known as dropping the writ, we've been doing this for 150 years or so on PEI.

What makes things different this time is everyone has known for years now that October 3 would be the day. Just like, barring some political catastrophe, we also know the NEXT election will be September 7, the first Monday in September 2015. And every four years after that.

PEI is one of a number of provinces now with fixed election dates.

Recently Kerry Campbell spoke with Don Desserud, he's the new Dean of Arts at UPEI, and he studied fixed election dates as a researcher for the New Brunsick government of Bernard Lord.
