M.V. Miner Contract Awarded

MLA Geoff MacLellanw

Posted by Robert Doublett

People in Main-a-Dieu are pleased with news today that a Nova Scotia company will remove the MV Miner.

Transportation Minister Geoff MacLellan says RJ MacIsaac Construction of Antigonish won the contract to remove the derelict vessel which ran aground two and a half years ago.

The province says price, removal method, health and safety, the environment and worker accommodation were considered when awarding the contract. The work will cost an estimated $11.9 million, the province says.

Most of the demolition will take place on Scaterie Island, where the vessel is grounded. R-J MacIsaac will set up a camp on the island, it will build a road, landing area, and an armour stone breakwater to protect against the sea.

The company has until November to complete the work.
