Thomas Morgenstern of Austria earned his first ski jumping World Cup win of the season, beating two local favourites on the large hill in Lillehammer on Saturday.

Morgenstern scored 284.1 points over two rounds to hold off Johan Remen Evensen of Norway. Evensen finished with 276.9 points for second, ahead of compatriot Tom Hilde with 272.8.

Morgenstern, a three-time Olympic gold medallist, took the lead in the World Cup standings with 225 points after three events. Fellow Austrian Andreas Kofler was second with 200, followed by Ville Larinto of Finland with 172.

Morgenstern led by 1.9 points after the first jump. The Norwegian pair kept up the pressure with strong jumps in the final round but Morgenstern secured his place at the top of the podium with a jump of 137.5 metres.
