The Nashville Predators said on Monday that Mike Fisher suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during a training session.

Fisher, 34, underwent surgery and is expected out four to six weeks.

The centre scored 20 goals and 29 assists in 75 regular season games, with a minus-4 rating, four power-play goals and four game winners.

He joined Nashville late in the 2010-11 season in a trade with the Ottawa Senators, where he began his career in 1999-00.

The Peterborough, Ont., native has racked up 226 goals and 255 assists for 481 points in 887 regular season games.

Fisher tweeted, "Setbacks are opportunities for growth," on Monday and included a picture of his bandaged lower leg in a walking boot.

The Predators also announced the signing of free agent defenceman Anton Volchenkov to a one-year deal worth $1 million US.

The 32-year-old Russian was recently bought out of the last two years of a six-year, $25.5 million US contract signed with New Jersey in 2010. The rugged blue-liner has 19 goals and 107 assists and and 424 penalty minutes in 650 games with the Devils and Ottawa.
