Dallas Stars dismiss GM Joe Nieuwendyk

Team expected to hire Wings' Jim Nill

The Dallas Stars announced on Sunday that they have parted ways with general manager Joe Nieuwendyk.

A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that the Stars have hired Jim Nill to replace Nieuwendyk.

Nieuwendyk, inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011, worked in the front office for the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs before taking the GM role with the Stars since May of 2009.

"Joe Nieuwendyk has represented the Dallas Stars extremely well as the club's General Manager and has helped put pieces in place that will once again turn this team into a contender," Stars owner Tom Gaglardi said in the release. "I would like to thank Joe for his contributions to this hockey club and wish him and his family only the best in the future.

"However, I believe it is time to take this organization in a different direction with our intentions set on returning to the elite of the National Hockey League. My commitment to the Dallas Stars is unwavering, and I am confident we have found the right General Manager to return us to the pathway of success."

Nieuwendyk's contract was set to expire at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season.

Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan, hired by Nieuwendyk two years ago, had nothing but praise for his former gneral manager on Saturday.

"All I can say is that Joe's been tremendous for me. I think he's done a hell of a job," Gulutzan said. "You can see with our farm team and the young guys that we have here."

Nill has helped the Detroit Red Wings extend their post-season streak to 22 straight appearances. He was Detroit's assistant general manager for 15 seasons and has worked for the franchise's front office since 1994.

On Hockey Night In Canada's Hotstove segment on Saturday, Elliotte Friedman reported that the Stars were looking to replace Nieuwendyk with Nill.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Stars that they would officially introduce their new general manager on Monday morning at a press conference in Dallas.
