Friday in review: Razor close

The stakes weren't all the same, but Friday saw exciting head-to-head at a Wimbledon tuneup, the European soccer championships, and in the CFL's Battle of Alberta.

England-Sweden

England appeared in danger of heading into their final group stage game in desperation mode when Sweden went up 2-1 at Euro. You might even say they were walking a proverbial tightrope.

But the Three Lions stormed back with two goals of their own to eliminate the Scandinavian country. England isn't in the clear yet, but they're in good position heading into next week's match against host Ukraine.

Federer-Raonic

Canadian tennis powerhouse Milos Raonic fired 25 aces — the equivalent of an entire set of games — but once again Roger Federer's class shone through in a three set match in Halle, Germany that went to a tiebreaker.

The Thornhill, Ont., native has now lost three matches to Federer in three sets this season — on hard courts, on clay and grass. But he's getting close.

Stamps-Esks

Maybe it didn't mean all that much but the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos provided reason to believe that the 2012 installment of their historic rivalry will be exciting. The Stamps scored 10 points in the last two minutes to steal victory for their home fans in exhibition action.

Never mind

Of course, things can go suspenseful to a blowout in mere seconds in the world of sports. Colorado and Detroit headed into the 12th inning Friday night tied at 4-apiece, but the Rockies proceeded to pour in a franchise record eight runs in an extra inning.
