Mounties in Langley, B.C., are asking for the public’s help in getting some very old war metals back to their rightful owner.

Police found the medals at a vacant apartment last spring, along with a bag containing several dozen foreign coins, most of which were small in denomination and from countries belonging to the British Commonwealth.

Of particular note are two commendation medals from the First World War. The Star medal is engraved with R. Highrs and the Victory medal with 2374 Pt. A. Alexander R. Highrs.

Cpl. Holly Marks said Veterans Affairs has not been able to help solve the mystery, but investigators have determined the medals were likely issued to a British Regiment, the Royal Highlanders who fought out of Newfoundland.

"I am hoping there is someone out there who knows the family of this Private Alexander and they want to get these medals back," said Marks.

The medals were among a number of items left in the apartment, likely taken in a break and enter.
