PART 1 Angela Morris finds it tough to raise a deaf daughter and a son who's hard of hearing. She believes family life would be better if she herself was deaf. Caroline Winerovsky's deafness made her feel like an immigrant from another world, a stranger whose refuge was to read alone. Now, with lip reading her world has opened up.
PART 2 Chris Belanger was born with profound hearing loss and is going into hospital to have a cochlear implant. We listen in before and after his surgery. Penny LeClair went deaf as a young woman. Her cochlear implant has enabled her to rediscover the joy of sounds, even simple sounds of cooking and gardening. When Trish Kelly's mother went deaf she suffered hearing loss and Trish experienced "mother loss". But her mother says she has gained something - the peace of silence.
