Soggy sandwiches - solved!

Ready for a picnic but a bit stumped on the soggy sandwich dilemma? Packing ingredients in separate containers and building the sandwich on location would solve this. But what if you need it ready to go without any assembly? Here are some tips for non-soggy sandwiches.
1) Use bread that will hold up well even if it soaks up some of the sandwich filling's juices. Try crusty baguette or ciabatta.
Spread a thin layer of butter on each slice of bread. This helps create a moisture barrier between the bread and all the fixings. Cutting out butter? Try lightly toasting the inside of each bread or roll. This helps boost the mushiness resistance factor.
2) Now you're ready to pile on the meat. Make sure you remove any excess oil, juice or wetness.
3) Add your condiments. Placing the condiments away from the bread helps prevent sogginess.
4) If you're adding veggies, set them on a paper towel to remove excess moisture. You can layer lettuce on top for added moisture prevention.
5) Then comes the cheese. If you can't eat cheese, then use another layer of meat as a moisture barrier before the final slice of bread.
The key: keep the condiments, veggies and anything with possible liquid content in the middle of the sandwich. Use cheese, meat and lettuce as moisture barriers.
6) Finally, try wrapping your sandwiches with parchment paper or wax paper. Plastic wrap, bags or containers can trap moisture inside.
Kids love this school lunch classic but thumbs down for mushy peanut butter and jam sandwiches. Keep soggy out by slathering peanut butter on both sides of the bread and keeping the jelly in the middle. For extra drip-free prevention, there's the jelly pocket method.
