My Inspiration: The Prescription: Action! project was launched by doctors in the Edmundston region in the spring of 2011, when alarming statistics on the health of New Brunswick's population demonstrated one of the highest obesity rates in the country.
Furthermore, the numbers revealed that only half of the province's adults engage in physical activity on a regular basis. Our main mission is therefore to encourage the population to get active with a view to improving their health.
The organization offers various activities - which are all free - with the goal of getting people active, motivating them to eat better, informing them about available resources and providing them with access to healthcare professionals.
#1 Health Goal: To prove the statistics wrong. We want to see positive changes in next Population Health Snapshot, drawn up by the New Brunswick Health Council.
Biggest Challenge: Being inactive, overweight and making poor food choices have serious consequences. Among other things, they lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases. Patients require a prescription. For what? Physical activity and good food choices!
Biggest Accomplishment: The organization offers more than 10 free activities for our region, as well as for populations in other areas. These activities include hiking, a healthy food tasting event, recreational snowshoeing, a collection of healthy recipes and a skating activity. In January, we also met a participation challenge called "Défi participation", during which the local population succeeded in accumulating 959,999 minutes of physical activity.

Personal Tip for Canadians: The prescription is the same for all Canadians: action! We all need to take action, whether that means physical activity or food choices. No more excuses, junk food and inactivity... Go!
