Getting Fit With Drums

By Liz Fryer

About 8 years ago, I found myself 30 pounds overweight with no time for fitness or activity.

After a chance encounter with a woman who was a personal trainer, I decided to give myself a gift for my 35th birthday - 10 sessions with this personal trainer.

Who knew then what a life-altering experience this decision would be! The first 10 sessions flew by in no time.

My trainer, Val, came to my house after my kids were in bed and began a routine of weight training with some walking and other easy cardio activities.

I really looked forward to her visits and she brought me reading material which ranged from the benefits of weight training, to eating habits and also meditation and mind-body-soul wellness.

I signed up for 10 more sessions and before I knew it, she had me running for 5 to 10 minutes at a time while continuing weight training. I was able to run 5 kms within 6 months of starting my training!! What an accomplishment for someone who always hated running.

Together we traveled to an adventure spa in Utah where we participated in a cardio fitness class involving drumming. We had a blast and knew that with her fitness experience and my experience as a Primary teacher, we would be able to adapt the program to meet the needs of
students across Ontario and support the Ontario Government's Healthy/Active Classrooms Program.

With a lot of thought and hard work we have created our own business entitled "DrumFIT" and are going into classrooms to encourage educators and children alike about the importance of fitness, free play and FUN!

The kids get to pound out their frustration on exercise balls while exercising both their body and their brain in a series of cardiovascular exercises.

DrumFIT gets kids active

We use music that the kids can relate to, (ie. current dance hits and "classic" songs) to get them moving their bodies, finding their rhythm and engaging their imaginations.

We stress that there is no wrong way to drum and, although we tend to focus on schools we have had just as much fun drumming with adults and seniors.

Who would have thought that I would go from being so inactive to co-founding a business in the fitness and education industry which would also end up benefiting so many others?
