How To Take TIME

I'm part of: Take TIME for Your Child's Health
#1 Health Goal: Introduce my twin boys, Liam and Connor, to a variety of activities so that our family can be active together and I can increase my own activity level.
Biggest Challenge: Scheduling and cost! Trying to fit physical activity into our already very busy lives. Also trying to coordinate activities so that both boys and I can be active at the same time. The cost of organized sports can be very challenging, especially with twins - you need twice as much stuff and it can't be passed along from one sibling to the next.
Biggest Accomplishment: Learning how to "Take TIME" so that my sons can learn about different types of activity and how important it is to be active on a daily basis and being brave enough to give new activities a try! The free family fun events offered by the Take TIME programme were a great way to start because we could just show up, with little planning needed, and all of the equipment and help we needed was provided. We learned that the community pool has lifejackets for young children and that helmets can be borrowed at the skating rink. We also learned about easy and interesting hikes in local parks, and how to make snow sculptures with food colouring. We also learned about many businesses and private facilities that offer physical activity opportunities in our community. After being introduced to many different activities, Connor and Liam were involved in soccer all summer and as a family we did a lot more swimming, hiking and biking. This fall the whole family took part in a Groove Fit class at Bodyfit, and our skating is improving with regular trips to the skating rink for the parent and tot skate with our friends Bonnie, Sam and Charlie.
I will continue to Live Right Now by: Ensuring that our family has regular times for physical activity together (skating, swimming, hiking and biking); Continuing to attend the Take TIME events to introduce new or different activity options; Starting a Zumba fitness class that coordinates with the days and times when my sons go to their kindergarten class.
Personal Tip for Canadians: Our lives are always hectic, and often it seems overwhelming to think about adding one more thing into the schedule, particularly when children are young and need a lot of attention and support to participate. To get started, look for opportunities in your community that are designed for families and require little planning. If you can go on the spur of the moment, then take that opportunity even it it's just for a short time. Once you go a couple of times, you'll start to realize that it's easier than you thought it would be, and being active with your children is the best reward for your efforts.
