Jean-Paul Michaud, 80 years old and his wife Betty, 79 years old, training in their basement.
Name: Jean-Paul Michaud, 80 years young
City: Edmundston, New Brunswick
#1 Health Goal: Be active! I've always told my children how important it is to have a healthy heart and to make it pump! There is a corner set aside in my basement for my daily cardio workout. I also have my favourite outdoor sports. I've always said that you can get a good workout without having to pay for a monthly gym membership.
My favourite winter sport is cross-country skiing, which I do every day. I also golf every day in the summertime. I live close to the golf course and in the morning I ride 20 minutes by bike before teeing off for 18 holes. Sometimes I'd like to keep golfing the same afternoon, but my wife stops me! She puts me to work outside in the yard with her.
I've always been active and involved in sports. At 40 years of age, I underwent some medical testing because I wanted to take a scuba diving course. It was the doctor's opinion that I was too old to take up this kind of sport. My response: "You are never too old to start something new!" I continued to scuba dive for many years after that.
I have so many memories of the sports in which I've been involved throughout my life. I've participated in marathons, triathlons, and half-marathons, with my family always there supporting and motivating me.
Biggest Accomplishment: To have enjoyed good health to do everything that I've done and continue to do in my life.
I will continue to Live Right Now by... adhering to the same recipe I have been for years: being active! Laughter is also good for your health. That's why I enjoy laughing and making others laugh.
Personal Tip for Canadians: I will tell Canadians reading this article what I would tell my children: be active and take care of your heart. Your heart takes care of you and you must do the same. That doesn't mean running a marathon or becoming an Olympic athlete. Simply put down the TV remote and go for a walk or park your car further away to get to your destination. And watch what you eat!
