Garfield's Challenge: Get Involved
Garfield Wilson is the owner of a personal training company called Forward Fitness and one of the trainers from CBC's Village on a Diet.
Have you been keeping up with Garfield? As an enthusiastic supporter of Live Right Now, he's challenged all Canadians to take a weekly Endurance Test. There's no point in a weekly test unless we're doing something in between to take our fitness to the next level, so Garfield has been offering weekly tips:
There are so many ways for us to improve our health and fitness, and one of the most rewarding and fulfilling ways is to become active in our communities.
This philosophy was the key to our success while we were in Taylor, BC filming Village on a Diet. It was incredible to watch those who lacked confidence become leaders, and those who had low self-esteem become sources of inspiration.
Creating community can be as simple as signing up to help or participate in a walk-a-thon, coaching your child's sports team or joining a running group to raise awareness and funds for a local charity.
I myself coach my son Jude's U-7 soccer team here in our community. Now, we didn't exactly have a heavy-hitting team - in fact, some of our teammates didn't even know how to play soccer at the beginning of the season - but we had a lot of heart.
This past weekend was our year-end tournament called "Fun Day". It featured three games for each team, a skills competition and an awards ceremony.
After losing every game the boys were still happy to be playing, goofing around, and just having fun with each other.
I was already proud and more so when, to our team's surprise, they received the 1st place trophy for the skills competition!
The most important part of our year together was how much fun we all had running around the soccer pitch, being active together, and getting to know each other.
That is my challenge to you this week and going forward. Get active in your community, build relationships and create events to inspire.... Get in the mix!!
