's novel The Book of Negroes
won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize -- and CBC's 2009 Canada Reads competition -- and it's a best-seller he's discussed with George Stroumboulopoulos
, CBC Radio's Metro Morning
and CBC Books
. (The book is also being adapted into a new TV movie coming soon to CBC.)
This fall, though, he'll be leading a new conversation, as Hill will present this year's Massey Lectures
. Speaking about his upcoming book, Blood: the Stuff of Life
(available in September through House of Anansi Press), Hill will travel to five Canadian cities starting October 15
. The author, who was revealed as the 2013 Massey lecturer late last year, will reach Halifax, Vancouver and Edmonton before concluding in Toronto November 1.
Once again, the talks will be broadcast on CBC Radio One. Ideas
will begin airing the Massey Lectures on November 11
(tune in at 9 p.m./9:30 NT), but for anyone interested in hearing Hill in person, your time to buy tickets is now.
Ticket sales opened today (August 6), and for further info on how and where to buy, visit CBC.ca/masseys
Hill's ninth book, Blood: The Stuff of Life
, is said to be an exploration of how the scientific and social understanding of "blood" has shaped the relationships between people and cultures through history. As the author himself writes on the site for CBC Radio's Ideas
: "Blood is truly the stuff of life: a bold and enduring determinant of identity, race, deprivation, athletic superiority and nationhood. It is so vital to our sense of ourselves, our abilities and our possibilities for survival that we have invested money, time and energy in learning how to manipulate its very composition."
Since the Massey Lectures' origin in 1961, CBC has broadcast the event, and archives of past series can be found online. Visit the Ideas website
for recordings dating back to the series' inception. In recent years, famed presenters have included Margaret Atwood, Stephen Lewis and Douglas Coupland. The CBC Massey Lectures schedule includes:
