Argo - one of this year`s most highly anticipated films to come out of the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival - will hit theatres across the country tomorrow (Oct. 12). The film is based on the declassified true story of the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis in which six American diplomats were rescued after posing as a Canadian filming crew scouting locations for the fake film Argo, thanks largely to both former CIA agent Tony Mendez and former Canadian ambassador to Iran Ken Taylor.
CBC reported on the rescue and the operation, called the Canadian Caper, back in 1980. Take a look at the coverage from The National host Knowlton Nash and reporter David Halton:
Recently, CBC also sat down with Tony Mendez to discuss his role in the rescue, as well as the film.
