The 2013 Polaris Short List Is Here; Where to Find Music on CBC
July 16, 2013By Leah Collins
They're the 10 best albums made in Canada this year, so maybe you should listen to them. The Polaris Music Prize Short List for 2013 is out, announced live at Toronto's Drake Hotel Tuesday morning. And music from all 10 albums -- which were selected via Polaris jury vote -- can be heard now at CBC Music, and the site has even curated a playlist featuring all the honoured discs.
About that, your nominees for 2013 are: God Speed You! Black Emperor; Zaki Ibrahim; Metz; Purity Ring; Colin Stetson; Tegan and Sara; A Tribe Called Red; Whitehorse; Young Galaxy; and Metric -- who will, as per Kathleen Edwards, be "representing hot pants on the Short List."
Edwards, a former Polaris nominee herself, will be co-hosting the September 23 gala with another twice shortlisted artist, Shad. This marks the first time CBC Radio 3's Grant Lawrence hasn't been involved in MC-ing the event -- and handed an oversized novelty cheque to the winner. (This year's champ will claim $30,000.)
"Grant was so awesome at hosting all of our events that we had to replace him with two hosts," Polaris founder Steve Jordan told the crowd at the nominations press conference.
A new hosting duo is just one change for the 2013 edition of Polaris. The September 23 gala will be moving from its usual home at Toronto's Masonic Temple to the Carlu, and for the first time, tickets to the event will be on sale to the public. Look for more info on that later at the Polaris Music Prize website.
