Paul Shaffer Tells Strombo He Was Almost George on Seinfeld

One of the greatest things about the George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight show is that many of Strombo's guests seem to dish out fun facts about their careers. Last week, Strombo welcomed to the red chair Canadian music star Paul Shaffer - famous for his role as the bandleader/sidekick on the Late Show with David Letterman - and learned that Shaffer had been offered a very different type of gig back in the 90s.

As it turns out, Shaffer had originally been slated to play the role of George Costanza on the iconic television show Seinfeld. In fact, Jerry Seinfeld himself asked Shaffer to play the part.

Here's why it didn't happen...

Shaffer, a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, appears nightly on CBS's Lateshow as the show's longtime musical director and also hosted this year's Canada's Walk of Fame Gala.
