LISTEN: Jian Interviews Life of Pi Oscar Nominee Mychael Danna

Canadian composer Mychael Danna accepting the Golden Globe for Best Original Score in Life of Pi

Award-winning Canadian composer Mychael Danna once thought Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi wouldn't be made into a movie. But not only has Ang Lee's adaptation earned a ton of critical acclaim, it's Mychael's score for the film that has garnered him two Academy Award nominations. On the heels of winning the Golden Globe for his work on Pi, the Toronto-base composer is also considered a favourite to win in those two Oscar categories; Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

Mychael dropped by studio Q on Tuesday (Jan. 22) to chat with Jian Ghomeshi about his career making music for major motion pictures (which happens to span more than 25 years), his Oscar nominations and his experience working on Life of Pi.

Later on in the show, Jian continued his Oscar chat with Ricky Sekhon; one of the stars of Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar nomination thriller Zero Dark Thirty. Ricky spoke about his experience portraying al Qaeda leader - and one-time most wanted man - Osama bin Laden.
