This morning (May 1) on CBC Radio One, from Studio Q, Jian Ghomeshi announced that the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (ACCT) is uniting its film, television and digital awards - namely the Genies and the Geminis - into one gala event that will be shown on CBC Television in March of next year.
Here is Martin Katz from the ACCT explaining the merger:
A series of celebrations of Canada's film, television and digital industries will be shown on CBC in the lead up to the event to be held on Sunday, March 3, at 8pm (8.30 NT).
"Following extensive industry consultation and outreach, the Academy Board has chosen to consolidate the Genie and Gemini awards into one major powerhouse show for the Canadian public," says Academy Chair Martin Katz.
Academy CEO, Helga Stephenson, said "the Academy's new awards will be a true showcase of our country's finest talent in all screen industries in this two-hour star-studded red carpet gala."
"The Canadian film, television and digital industries play a vital role in our cultural identity, and we're proud to shine a light on them in one groundbreaking television event," said Kirstine Stewart, Executive Vice President of English Services at CBC. "We look forward to working alongside our partners at the ACCT to celebrate the Canadian screen industry like never before."
You can still relive the best of the 26th Gemini Awards and 32nd Genie Awards ceremonies here at CBC Live. We were live streaming backstage in the Tom Green Room at the Geminis and we had Canadian supermodel Stacey McKenzie and Mr. D's Lauren Hammersley hosting the live red carpet stream from the Genies. During the show, our very own Jamey Ordolis and CBC News' Eli Glasner were backstage talking to the winners and big names in the CBC Live Lounge. Check out a backstage sneak peek of the Tom Green Room (you can still watch the whole show in the Geminis section) and our gallery from the Genies below:
