The Life and Times of Carol Shields

"I always think how hard it is to be human. You never get a day off." - Carol Shields

Carol Shields. She's a Pulitzer Prize-winner (Stone Diaries), a runner-up for the Booker Prize, a winner of the Governor General's Award, and an Orange Prize-winner for Larry's Party. Her books are now international best-sellers. She has published 16 novels, short stories, plays and poetry, and was Chancellor of Winnipeg University. A year ago she discovered that she had stage-three breast cancer. Two days after diagnosis, she underwent a mastectomy and then a six-month course of radiation and chemotherapy treatment. With help from family and friends, Life & Times of Carol Shields takes an intimate look at her life as she confronts a life-threatening illness.

Born in Chicago, Carol Shields has lived in Canada since 1957. While studying in England she met her husband Donald, a Canadian, and it was the beginning of a love story that has spanned over 40 years. Her husband and five children are the cornerstone of her life and their reflections are a major part of the Life & Times of Carol Shields. While raising her family in Winnipeg, Shields noticed that there weren't many novels about women and their lives - she began writing them, and the novels established her as a major figure on the Canadian literary scene. In the documentary, Shields is seen in her ordered domestic life, writing at her computer, shopping, cooking, and enjoying the fruits of literary success - interviews, theatre openings, awards. Among those who comment on Carol Shields and her work are Margaret Atwood, agent Christopher Potter, theatre critic Richard Ouzounian, and CBC Radio's Eleanor Wachtel.

Life & Times of Carol Shields ends in Victoria as the writer and her husband begin a new life, refugees from Winnipeg's harsh winters. And, as she reflects on her illness and the possibility that her time is limited, she continues working on a new novel. She always maintains her characteristic sense of hope.
