At Home in the Universe: The Life and Times of William Shatner

William Shatner's portrayal as Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise has earned him millions of fans all over the world.  Arguably Canada's best-known actor, Shatner has also attracted a handful of detractors.  He's been the butt of jokes, a victim of the rumour mill, and over a career spanning five decades he's gained a reputation that ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous and the glorious to the villainous.  William Shatner: At Home In The Universe reveals the person behind the myths in an intimate portrait on Life and Times.

"I don't remember anybody offering me a hand-up.  I never had a mentor.I never got anything for nothing.  And that, I think, has shaped my way of thinking about people needing to survive on their own to the best of their abilities," says Shatner.

The documentary visits Shatner at his California ranch with family and friends; follows him on a rare visit to his old neighbourhood in Montreal, the city of his childhood and the place where he first encountered racism; and walks the corridors of McGill University, where he began his acting career.

Candid interviews with those who know him best include fellow actor and longtime friend, Leonard Nimoy; his daughters Melanie, Lisabeth, and Leslie; and actors Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: The Next Generation), who give personal insights into the actor and the man.

At 68, Shatner loves life and lives it large.  Still a Canadian citizen after 40 years of living and working in the United States, he is a world class equestrian, an animal lover, successful entrepreneur, and a passionate advocate for the environment and children's rights.  An irrepressible punster and practical joker, he is also a complex and introspective man who is still searching for affirmation, success and "the next idea or project."
