The journey from street busker to superstar
began in Halifax, where the teenaged Sarah morphed into a
punk skateboarder and joined a rock band. Her parents were
not impressed – but Vancouver’s Nettwerk Records
was. They offered Sarah her first record deal – even
though she’d never written a single song - and her career
took off. But her personal life was in turmoil – Sarah
talks about discovering she was adopted and the emotional
reality of her adoption.
The documentary traces her tumultuous rise to stardom and
explores Sarah’s unease with her own pop celebrity.
She’s had to fend off stalkers and one obsessive fan
even killed himself. A feminist and entrepreneur, she has
been both reviled and exalted as a saviour of women’s
music. Along the way, she’s had “too close for
comfort” affairs with her band members only to end up
marrying her drummer on a Jamaican beach.
By the age of 30, McLachlan was a million selling pop superstar
with her picture on the cover of Rolling Stone. Then she walked
away from it all – to become a mother. But the songs
never stopped.
I Will Remember You: The Life and Times of Sarah McLachlan
is an intimate look into the life of a recording artist –
as told by her family and friends who have never previously
been interviewed. Honest and moving, I Will Remember You is
the first look inside the life of one of Canada’s greatest
musical talents.
