While most people occasionally
have hair-brained ideas, Lishman actually brings his to life.
It was a painstaking process, but Lishman persisted and finally
was able to fly with the geese. It was his hope that
he could open up new migration routes and thus help save endangered
species like the whooping crane.
A farm boy from Pickering, Ontario, Bill Lishman did not
display signs of his curiosity and inventiveness in his early
years. A learning disability led to a poor school record
and he later drifted, until he was given his grandfather's
wood carving tools. Bill Lishman became a sculptor.
Lishman created some impressive and controversial works:
a steel horse welded from scrap metal, a crushed car piece
for Vancouver's Expo '86, and a 27-foot stainless steel salmon
for New Brunswick.
In Wild Bill Lishman, actor Jeff Daniels, Lishman's wife
and family, and many of the people who have worked with him
over the years comment on the life and work of this unusual
inventor and artist.
