Born premature on the back of a horse-drawn
buckboard, Jackson has come a long way from the one-room shack
where he started his life on the One Arrow Reserve in Saskatchewan.
His mother, Rose, was a Cree Indian and his father, Marshall,
an Englishman. When the family moved to Winnipeg, Jackson
dropped out of school at the age of 15 and left home to hustle
pool and live on the streets. At one point he was arrested
and found himself in jail. This would prove to be a turning
point in his life.
In this film, Jackson talks candidly about the twists and
turns of his life, his struggle for survival and his descent
into self-destruction and despair. The film traces the roots
of his music, acting and philanthropy and includes rare footage
of concerts, movies and stage performances. It also includes
interviews with his family, his wife Alison and longtime friends
and colleagues.
Jackson's journey is the remarkable story of a boy born into
poverty who would take the thousand and one steps to become
an inspiration to all Canadians.
