In the high stakes environment of racing,
Hawley has distinguished himself with his clean living, fierce
competitiveness and an uncanny way with horses.
Sandy Hawley’s most significant race has been not on
the back of a thoroughbred but against virulent skin cancer.
Told 11 years ago he had only months to live he has battled
the melanoma with experimental drugs, diet, prayer and determination.
The Gentleman Jockey includes rare home movie footage
of the child playing piggy back; of the long-haired young
rider who took the racing world by storm; the mature Hawley
at home in Mississauga teaching his two young sons how to
ride on rocking horses; and he reflects on the drama of pushing
1,200 pounds of muscle and sinew to breakneck speeds and the
punishing danger faced by the professional.
Original Air Date - March 19, 1997
Sandy Hawley retired from racing in 1998.
