He has been the scourge of the right wing,
champion of the middle classes, bringing a peculiarly Canadian
vision of democracy to the corridors of world power. It's
a vision rooted in his upbringing on a southern Ontario farm.
Ninety-five-year-old Galbraith was born among the "Scotch"
of Elgin County, Ontario, while Wilfred Laurier was still
prime minister, and raised by a family that believed in public
service and fairness. He went on to become a writer, politician,
professor, provocateur and perhaps the best known economist
in the English-speaking world. The Abiding Liberal: The Life
and Times of John Kenneth Galbraith traces Galbraith from
his country roots through his devotion to John Maynard Keynes
to the White House-where he served under Franklin Roosevelt,
and then later John F. Kennedy.
The presidents he worked for both died untimely deaths. For
Galbraith, those momentous losses were echoed by personal
ones. And for the first time ever, The Abiding Liberal reveals
how this Canadian economist almost turned the tide in Vietnam,
exerting intense influence on President Kennedy to pull out
of the war.
