A Dream as Big as Our Country: The Life and Times of Terry Fox

A Dream As Big As Our Country reveals the Terry Fox only family and friends knew, and features never-before-seen footage of him speaking and running on his "Marathon of Hope."  Terry's story is told through interviews with his family, his former girlfriend, his best friend and others who were influenced by his dream, including former hockey superstar Darryl Sittler, and Man in Motion, Rick Hansen.

Terry Fox never expected to be a hero.  He had an ordinary upbringing in the Vancouver suburbs as the second son in a family of four children.  A sports fanatic, he was neither big nor talented.  But what he lacked in these areas he more than made up for in competitiveness and perseverance.  When cancer claimed a leg, Fox decided to run across the country to raise money for cancer research.

The program delves into the darker moments Terry experienced on his journey, the fights he had with fundraisers, and the ways in which his emotions spilled out before the public.  What emerges is the profile of a driven, complex and inspirational young man.

When Terry Fox had to end the "Marathon of Hope" outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, he was two thirds of the way through his journey.  With him through most of the run was his younger brother, Darrell Fox.  In an emotionally charged scene, Darrell, now the National Director of the Terry Fox Foundation, returns to Thunder Bay with his wife and two young children to visit the Terry Fox Monument, erected near the site where Terry ended his run.  "It's exactly the way I remember Terry," says Darrell, "larger than life."

Before he died, Terry's exploits raised more than $24 million for cancer research, and inspired the annual Terry Fox Run.  To date, the run has raised more than $340 million.
