Behind the Mask: The Life and Times of Ken Danby

An intimate portrait of enormously popular realist painter Ken Danby, Ken Danby: Behind the Mask looks at the many sides of a complex man who has never before revealed so much publicly.  The program surveys Danby's career and looks at his personal life, and includes interviews with Danby's friends, Gordon Lightfoot and gallery owner, Walter Moos.

As Danby's life story is told, the program charts preparations for his first exhibition in 13 years featuring over 80 paintings.  We see Danby working in his studio, packing up the paintings for the show, and setting up in the gallery.  Viewers will see the two nights of private exhibitions for celebrities and dealers before the official opening on October 24, 1998 at Toronto's Carrier Gallery.  One of his paintings, with an asking price of a quarter of a million dollars, was sold on the first preview night.

In Ken Danby: Behind the Mask friends discuss his early years as a 'starving artist', in Toronto's Yorkville area.  Later Danby would paint canvases like the fabled 'At the Crease' featuring a goalie crouched at the net and many other paintings of sports figures, including Bobby Orr.

Although Danby hasn't had an exhibit in 13 years, he has been very active - fighting a proposed garbage dump near his home, taking on the Canada Council and National Gallery, and standing up for the often maligned school of realist painting.  Rounding out an intimate portrait are interviews with Danby's brother, his wife, and two of his children from a previous marriage.

Original Air Date - November 2, 1998
