The Life and Times of Burton Cummings

He rocketed to fame with the groundbreaking success of The Guess Who in the 1960s and has never looked back.

Born in north Winnipeg in 1947, Cummings was an only child, abandoned by his father and raised by his mother.   She used to make him play the piano as a child, but once he discovered rock 'n' roll he was glued to the keyboard.  Cummings' first taste of success was with his high school rock band, The Deverons.

North Winnipeg in the '60s was a hotbed for musical talent, producing such greats as Neil Young, Cummings and his songwriting partner, Randy Bachman.  At 18, Cummings joined a hot new rock band called The Guess Who.  Their first single with Cummings on vocals, These Eyes, went Top Ten in the he U. S. and Canada on its release in 1968.

The songwriting team of Cummings and Bachman charted dozens of top-selling singles for The Guess Who including, Laughing, Undun, Hand Me Down World and their greatest hit, American Woman, the biggest selling single of 1970.
