David Clayton-Thomas makes music his life

“I had no choices. It was music or die…or spend the rest of my life in those hellholes. It’s not a matter of being brave, courageous or anything else… it’s a matter of just simply, this all you have.” – David Clayton-Thomas

David Clayton-Thomas - complex, bombastic, one of the most influential
singer/songwriters of our time, and still furiously creative. His is the dramatic story of a tough, street-fighting kid who learned how to play the blues in Ontario's prisons, and who went on to be the voice of one of the most successful and innovative bands ever – Blood, Sweat and Tears. Filmed in New York, Toronto and Nashville, Life and Times of David Clayton-Thomas includes historic film footage from the Woodstock era, appearances on early TV shows, interviews with Clayton-Thomas and many of his lifelong friends - musicians who have been profoundly influenced by him.

It was a chance meeting in the ‘60s with Blood Sweat & Tears founder and drummer, Bobby Colomby that provided Clayton-Thomas with the opportunity to be the “voice” of Blood, Sweat and Tears. “We had not heard anyone sound like that and the sound of his voice with the band, it was an instant decision,” says Colomby. Their first album sold a staggering 10 million records, gave birth to three singles, and garnered five Grammy Awards - dominating the music charts worldwide. Five successive gold albums and three more gold singles followed. By 1972, Blood, Sweat & Tears was on top of the music world. A path of heavy drinking and self-destruction followed for Clayton-Thomas, and band members began to drift away to pursue their own musical ambitions. By 1982 the drinking had stopped, he welcomed the birth of a daughter, and a revitalized Blood, Sweat & Tears was storming back to the concert stages, jazz festivals, and concert halls.

Today, Clayton Thomas has returned to the studio for his first self-produced solo project of new original songs and classic blues tunes in years as well as continuing to tour worldwide with Blood, Sweat & Tears.
