The Life and Times of Don Cherry

He could be the most loved, or the most hated man on television, depending on whom you ask.

Don Cherry, the opinionated, brash, outspoken coach of Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night in Canada is profiled in this episode of Life and Times.

At his home in Mississauga, Cherry described his childhood influences: his mother, a “tiger,” who taught him never to take a slight; and his father who read Horatio Alger success stories to Cherry as a boy.

Cherry also talks about his 16 years in the minor leagues and how that experience shaped him and made him tough. Viewers hear from Whitney Smith, a foreman who ultimately made hockey history by laying off the 38-year-old Cherry from a construction job where he worked after dropping out of the minors. Cherry tells how that lay-off led him back to hockey and recounts the remarkable story of how, three years later, he became coach of the Boston Bruins.

Through interviews with his wife Rose, his son Tim and daughter Cindy, a very personal picture of the man behind the “Grapes” persona emerges. Former executive producer of Hockey Night in Canada, Ralph Mellanby, describes how he gave Cherry his first chance on television.

CBC sportscaster Brian Williams recalls how he and Cherry almost came to blows on the air. Viewers also hear from Cherry’s longtime Coach’s Corner partner, Ron MacLean, hockey legend Bobby Orr, Newsworld sportscaster Bruce Dowbiggin and Philip White, Professor of Kinesiology at McMaster University, who has written a paper on Cherry.

Original Air Date - October 11, 1996
