Liona Boyd's story begins in England where she was born to teachers John and Eileen Boyd.  The family immigrated to Canada in the mid-fifties. With parents who were extremely supportive, Liona Boyd was encouraged in her classical studies, and inspired by her mentor, the great guitarist Julian Bream, and tutored by Eli Kassner in Canada.

In the 1960s the Boyd family went to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.  The beauty and romantic spirit of this beautiful town in the mountains is credited with having a deep influence on Boyd's life and music.

Romancing the Guitar tracks Boyd's pilgrimage to Paris to study with LaGoya, her discovery by Gordon Lightfoot in the 1970s and her participation in his concerts.  The documentary also deals with Boyd's recently revealed romantic involvement with Prime Minister PierreTrudeau.

Original Air Date - January 8, 1999
