Showtime: then and now
The genesis of Anka's hit "Diana"

Paul Anka burst onto the pop music scene some 45 years ago with his self-written love-song, Diana. It became a huge international hit – battling for years with Bing Crosby’s White Christmas for the right to be called the no.1 selling hit single of all time. Anka was just 15-years-old when it was recorded. And he followed it up with four more top-20 hits by the time he was 18. Destiny: Life and Times of Paul Anka takes viewers on a behind the scenes tour of Anka’s concerts, his home, his recording studio, and visits with family, friends, and Anka himself.

Since leaving Ottawa for New York at age 16, he’s never looked back. He’s wealthy, a name entertainer around the world, and a perennial success - one of the few recording artists in history to have a top-50 record in five consecutive decades. He has sold more than 40 million albums and singles. Arguably, he’s been even more successful as a composer, writing more than 900 songs: My Way, for Frank Sinatra, She's A Lady, for Tom Jones, and Jubilation, for Barbra Streisand. He composed The Tonight Show theme for Johnny Carson and earned an Academy Award nomination for his theme song for the movie The Longest Day (1962).

Destiny: Life and Times of Paul Anka follows in the footsteps of the ground-breaking 1962 NFB film, Lonely Boy, and presents a portrait of a driven performer, a star who is still chasing stardom. Cutting between the teen-ager of Lonely Boy and the 61-year-old performer of today, the documentary reveals Anka’s life-long pursuit of success and show business appeal. He’s really come full-circle. His five daughters are grown up and he and his wife are separated after almost 40 years of marriage. In the documentary, Anka returns to Ottawa to reconcile with his past, performing for the first time in 21 years in the hometown he sees as unappreciative. His reputation as a shrewd businessman, a survivor of almost 45 years in show business, earned him a place on Billboard Magazine's top 20 list of the world's most successful artists. Anka has endured, surviving musical trends, from teen idol through the British Invasion, from the psychedelic '60s through disco, and he can still pack in an audience.
