Makeup for men: Up your grooming game with these must-have products

A little makeup can go a long way. Guys, add these products to your grooming ritual for a subtle, yet polished look.

Men, we have a secret for you! You can fix your face by wearing makeup without actually looking like you're wearing makeup. We're not suggesting full eyeliner and lashes – just a few little touches here and there that won't look like you're wearing makeup but will make a huge difference. This is something more and more dudes – gay and straight alike – are trying, and makeup artist Vanessa Jarmam has got some makeup tips for you (or the man in your life)!

Tinted moisturizer

Your grooming in the morning should always include a moisturizer! Throw this onto your skin after your shower to allow it to settle into your skin as you continue getting ready. But did you know, that if you want to even out and warm up your complexion, there are tinted moisturizers out there? They will add moisture back into your skin while giving your face a smooth finish. A tinted moisturizer gives a slight polished look or a little tint to the skin compared to a foundation.

Do your research – there are many different kinds out there. Some are packed with Vitamin C that help reduce the appearance of pores and discoloration. There are ones with hyaluronic acid or with an SPF. There are even some for oily, acne prone skin.

If you're using a tinted moisturizer, remember to pull it down past your jaw into your neck. This will leave you with an even looking finish and it will also help to reduce redness and cover up razor burn. A tinted moisturizer has a lighter finish, so the coverage will be just enough and not too heavy.

We used the MAC Lightful C Tinted Cream SPF 30 with Radiance Booster.

Concealer

Guys with dark circles under their eyes and pimples on their chins do not have to suffer in silence! There is something out there called concealer that every dude should own. Women have been using it for decades – you're just at a disadvantage if you aren't. Let's start with under the eye.

To cancel out any blue under the eyes, conceal with a peach/orange undertone. To conceal a deep brown area under the eye, use an orange concealer. When in doubt – let your counter expert help you!

For men's grooming, use the tip of a finger or a sponge to tap the product into place. The sponge will hold onto any extra product; which will save your grooming from looking too heavy. If you have puffy bags under your eye, don't apply anything too light in colour on top because you risk increasing the appearance of your "bags". If you have dark lines settling under your puffy bags, you can brighten just that dark line. Remember this tip – don't apply a concealer too close to the lash line or you will instantly appear too overdone!

Simply tap a little concealer to the inner corner of your under eye and tap it into the darker area of your under eye. Remember to pull a little downward and over! Use a colour that matches your complexion – not something lighter. Anything that is lighter will highlight the area when you only want to mask and hide your blemish.

For a sheer finish that's not too heavy, try the MAC Mineralize concealer. For blemishes, try the EVOLUTION MAN Conceal and Treat.

Eyebrows

For all of the men out there with big, long and thick eyebrows – it's a blessing but a curse. They look great, but they can start to go rogue. Meet the brow gel! Just like you style your hair with product, you can be doing the same with your eyebrows. There are tinted and clean versions of this product.

Tinted brow gels are a clean way to give your brows a stronger appearance. When you pull the wand out of its container, wipe all of the edges clean and get rid of excess product. Brush through your brows in the direction of hair growth. The tint in this product will paint the hairs individually, giving them a more pronounced appearance as the gel grabs onto even the tiniest or lightest coloured hairs. If you don't want to add colour, clear brow mascara produces are perfect for those who want to set their natural brows into place.

For a tinted brow gel – try the Tarte Colored Clay Tinted Brow Gel. For a clear brow gel, try the MAC Brow Set.
