Model T Ford - Snowmobile... in Nain?
photos: The OKâlaKatiget Society Roads in Labrador are hard on even the toughest… most state of the art…. modern vehicles. So imagine…. a Model T Ford…. one of the first automobiles ever…. navigating the terrain far up Labrador’s north coast. Unlikely, right? But not impossible. Nearly one hundred years ago…. Model T owners could buy a kit… that would convert the car into a snowmobile. The front wheels were taken off and replaced with skis. Then… those front wheels were moved to the back… and all four were wrapped with tracks. And one of these ingenious contraptions did… in fact… make its way to Labrador. It came with two Chicago scientists on a research expedition to the Nain area. Now… it’s been discovered by a Nunatsiavut research team. Jamie Brake is an archaeologist with the Nunatsiavut government. Our Matt McCann reached him in Nain.
