North Coast petition to replace ferry

Posted by Tony Dawson

It’s no secret that people on the north coast of Labrador are fed up with the Northern Ranger. The vessel had numerous delays this summer, the price of freight has shot up and at one point a generator caught fire. Residents have been asking for the government to replace it, but that won’t be happening anytime soon. Now they’re getting ready to apply more serious pressure on the province — and it all begins with a petition making the rounds from community to community. Darlene Winters is from Hopedale. Labrador Morning producer Jay Legere spoke with her about it.

More on the 5-Wing Goose Bay weather office kerfuffle

Posted by Tony Dawson

Well, the dust has settled after a whirlwind of confusion at the weather office at 5 Wing Goose Bay. Last Tuesday, four of the six weather office employees were told their jobs would be eliminated come April. But THEN, the four employees were assured they would NOT lose their jobs after all. He’s a reporter for the Ottawa Citizen, and has been covering the Department of National Defense for almost 30 years. CBC’s Bailey White asked him what thought of the quick reversal.

More frustration over internet service in Labrador

Posted by Tony Dawson

Recently on the show we’ve been looking at internet service in Labrador. Bell Aliant says it has made significant improvements in the system over the last few years, and any more will have to be done in partnership with another entity — like the province. Meanwhile, some customers in Happy Valley-Goose Bay say they aren’t satisfied with the service, and even the Town has come forward saying it needs to be improved. But if you ask Chris Brennen, people using internet in Central Labrador are pretty well off. He lives in Postville, and spoke with Labrador Morning reporter Matt McCann about what it’s like getting online in that community.
